According to a study by Dr. James Levine that was reported in the "British Journal of Sports Medicine," you could burn 100 calories per hour using a stepper. Stepping machines are very popular in gyms, but they can be too bulky for those wishing to exercise at home. A mini stepper is a smaller, portable version of this machine.

Mini Stepper

A mini stepper machine is constructed from a lightweight steel tube frame and is approximately two feet in length. It has two foot plates with a grippy rubber surface on which to stand. Using your legs, downward pressure is applied to each plate with a variable hydraulic pump underneath providing the resistance. This low impact movement simulates climbing stairs.

Toned Thighs

A mini stepper has a vertical, up and down motion. This motion uses the muscles of the legs, in particular the quadriceps, says fitness expert Tina Juan. Advanced mini steppers also feature a twisting action of each foot plate. According to Diet and Fitness Resources, this movement enhances your thigh toning workout by engaging more of the muscles in your thighs, trimming the inner thighs and toning the outer thighs.

Toned Butt

The butt, or the glutes, as it is often referred to, is made up of three muscles. The gluteus maximus, the gluteus medius and the gluteus minimus. Exercising on a mini stepper works all three of these muscles together, as they are activated when you press your feet down on the plates. To enhance your glute shaping efforts, Muscle and Fitness Hers suggests pushing through your heels instead of the balls of your feet when stepping.

Improved Cardiovascular System

Exercising regularly on a mini stepper can greatly improve your cardiovascular system and fitness. If the use of hand weights is included, both upper and lower bodies can be exercised at the same time. Stepping up and down while pumping hand weights is a low impact form of total body aerobic exercise, says the U.S National Library of Medicine.

Considerations

Mini stepper machines are generally designed for home use and are not found in most gyms. Many people require the energetic atmosphere of a busy gym for motivation and find exercising at home a challenge. This should be taken into consideration when determining possible results.
